As an artist, Zakia engages in the transformative healing practice of self-reflection through self-portraiture. She has developed a ritual of using figurative art and various mediums to explore her self-conception, regulating her emotions and navigating her experiences as a Black woman in climate advocacy. This practice serves as a tool for grounding in her spirit and truth.

Zakia M. Elliott is Co-Director of Soil Generation, a Black & Brown grassroots agroecology collective of women and farmers and organizers working for food and land justice in Philadelphia. She works within a triad co-directorship with two Black and Brown women, with an embodied practice of shared leadership. Together, they co-create theory, analysis, and visions of Soil Generation: weaving lessons from the past, intentional action in the present, and envisioning radical and revolutionary futures.
